Rain protection
When to use EN 343 garments
EN 343 clothing is worn whenever workers face exposure to precipitation such as rain, snowflakes, fog or ground humidity. It is essential protection for professionals working outdoors - in construction, maintenance, agriculture, logistics, and similar sectors. However, EN 343 garments are not designed to protect against other forms of water contact, such as waves or pressurised water jets.
Performance requirements under EN 343
EN 343:2019 specifies two main parameters - resistance to water penetration and water vapour resistance - both tested on fabric and seams. The standard defines four classes for each parameter, with class 4 representing the highest performance level. An optional rain tower test can also be conducted on ready-made garments to verify their waterproofness in simulated rain conditions.
Resistance to water penetration (X)
Indicates the ability of a garment to resist water under pressure. The test measures how much water the material and seams can withstand before leaking, using a water column (measured in metres).
Water vapour resistance (Y)
Expressed as Ret (m²·Pa/W), this value indicates how well moisture and sweat vapour pass through the material. The lower the Ret value, the higher the breathability.
Rain tower test (R)
An optional test that simulates real rainfall on a finished garment. If a garment has not undergone the rain tower test, this parameter is replaced by an X in the symbol.
| Class |
X Resistance to water penetration (m) |
Y Water vapour resistance Ret (m²·Pa/W) |
R Rain tower test (R = tested / X = not tested) |
Performance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ≥ 0.8 | Ret > 40 | optional | Basic waterproofness, low breathability |
| 2 | ≥ 0.8* | 25 < Ret ≤ 40 | optional | Improved waterproofness, moderate breathability |
| 3 | ≥ 1.3* | 15 < Ret ≤ 25 | optional | High waterproofness, good breathability |
| 4 | ≥ 2* | Ret ≤ 15 | optional | Highest waterproofness and breathability |

Correct use and maintenance of EN 343 garments
To maintain certified protection under wet conditions, follow these recommendations carefully.
Close all fastenings and flaps securely to prevent water from entering the garment.
Wear the garment as part of a complete waterproof system, including hood and leg closures, to ensure full coverage.
After washing, restore the water-repellent finish according to the care instructions.
Replace any damaged or delaminated garments immediately to guarantee continued waterproof performance.
For garments with the lowest breathability (Y: class 1), the wearing time is restricted since limited breathability can cause discomfort or overheating in warmer environments. Follow the instructions on the label inside your garment for optimal protection.
The overall comfort of EN 343 clothing depends not only on its waterproof and breathable fabric, but also on ergonomics and layering. Combine your rain protection with moisture-wicking underlayers and suitable thermal insulation to optimise comfort during long periods of outdoor work.
